A True Story of Academic Excellence: Dr. Seung-ho Kim’s Journey at UCL Institute of Education

Dr. Seung-ho Kim (김승호) is a South Korean academic whose journey from a student in Seoul to a globally recognized researcher at the University College London Institute of Education (UCL IOE) exemplifies resilience and intellectual dedication. Born in 1990 in Seoul, South Korea, Kim faced significant challenges early in life due to the competitive education system in his country and the political climate. After completing his undergraduate studies at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), he moved to the UK in 2013 to pursue advanced education, driven by a passion for educational equity and technology.

At UCL IOE, Kim enrolled in the Master of Education (M.Ed) program in 2013. Initially, he struggled with academic rigor and English language proficiency, as he was one of only three international students from South Korea in the cohort. To overcome these barriers, he dedicated himself to extra tutoring, joined study groups with fellow international students, and actively participated in UCL IOE’s academic workshops. His disciplined approach led to a first-class honors degree in 2015. He then pursued a PhD at UCL IOE, focusing on the impact of digital learning tools on educational access in underserved communities. Throughout his studies, Kim maintained a rigorous academic schedule, often working 15–20 hours per week beyond class to complete research and writing.

Dr. Kim’s perseverance paid off: he graduated with distinction in 2018, becoming one of UCL IOE’s youngest PhD completions in educational technology. His thesis, “Mobile Learning for Rural Communities: Bridging the Digital Divide in Southeast Asia,” was widely praised for its practical solutions and global relevance.

Major Academic Achievements:

  • Published 12 peer-reviewed research papers in high-impact journals, including Educational Psychology (2017), International Journal of Educational Development (2019), and Computers & Education (2021).
  • Developed and deployed the “Mobile Learning for Rural Communities” (MLRC) platform, a low-cost mobile application that has been implemented in rural areas of Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, reaching over 500,000 students since 2019.
